As you can read on the front cover, this is "an unauthorised documentary film packed with exclusive interviews". Yes, it is not approved by Metallica, but that's not just bad as it gives us a different angle on the band.
The story starts where it began, Los Angeles 1981, and takes us all the way where Metallica are today. The biography is well documented with interviews of people in the band and people related to the band. The DVD goes very deep into the story, and especial the first years are well documented with facts even I didn't know about.
The sad part is the production. Yes it is a B-movie compared to the official videos, and the sound and picture is far from perfect. I also miss more interviews with the bandmembers and ex-members.
As a bonus you get a discography and an interactive quiz with really challenging questions. Yes it is worth the money, and I am glad that we get DVDs like this that can tell us the story from "the other side", not as Metallica want us to believe it is.
Although this is not a DVD you can see every weekend, it is a good addition to the official DVDs. Recommended.
