Hey! Three and a half years ago Sem posted my last review here in the 46th issue of the Newsletter.
It was nice to see the guys again. Lots of shit happened since then and this time Hungary wasn’t on the concert list, so I had to travel to Germany for them.
After a cold day at Hannover, around 19:00, people started to arrive for the gig. Nice arena, packed with fans (or people who were supposed to be fans…). Around 8:00 Godsmack came out, and greeted the Hannover crowd, by saying “Hi! Hamburg ! Great to be here!“ Nice try…
The lead singer said Hamburg later again, but the crowd ignored it, so Godsmack played on for app. 45 minutes. I must say, that their music was quite simple, but the singer and the drummer played a drum solo duel half way on their set, and it was huge! So, thumbs up for the drum bit, but still learn the location, dude!
20:45 was the time, when the lights went out for the second time and the intro started.
Blackened was the opening song.
Than came Fuel, Seek and Destroy, and Fade To Black. At this time of the concert I started to realize, that the crowd was constantly moving around. Not for the music…they were going out from the arena and buying a beer, then coming back again.
After a while this started to get really annoying, since you were always in ones way. I found it a little disrespectful. As someone from a country that Metallica rarely visits, it was very strange to see people leaving for a beer during ONE or Fade To Black. You should appreciate that they play 3-4 gigs in Germany/tour! If you come to see the band, don’t act like it is a fucking beer fest! ! ! I’m not talking about the first 10 rows of course, but the middle and the back section of the arena.
Anyway…
The Thing That Should Not Be was a nice surprise ! Long time, no hear. Frantic was OK, and Creeping Death was as good as it is always.
The Unnamed Feeling was a bit of a low point, but SAD was definitely waking everyone up. (A few guys spilled some beer on me, while on their way out.) The first pyro came at the intro of ONE. It’s good to see how pyro is evolving throughout the years…When I first saw Metallica in 92 it was completely different. Bigger booms, and shorter flashes were made this time, but it was still huge. The “landmine” pyro was great again, and from this song, luckily they used fire a bit more.
Whiplash was awesome. After the first goodbye they thanked for their fans for staying with them for such a long time by dedicating Harvester Of Sorrow for them. Nothing Else Matters started with the well known Lars-Kirk act…and a few guys spilled some beer on me, while on their way back in...then the first encore was finished with Master of Puppets.
St. Anger was up next. Rob, Kirk, James on the top of the stage…really awesome sight. Sandman kicked in with the pyros at the beginning and at the end. A few guys spilled some beer on me, while on their way out again.
The last encore was huge, since after Am I Evil, they started to play Damage Inc. They could even surprise a such a long time fan as me, by playing that ! Awesome !!! Never heard it before live!
