Finally, Saturday 20th, December came about and I could go and see my favourite band by far and the undisputed gods of metal...METALLICA!!!
The crowd were hyped up well before Metallica came on, Godsmack warming us up with an absolutely brilliant performance. I'd only heard a few of their songs and wasn't keen on them being on the whole of Metallica's European tour but they were superb. A great 10 minute drum solo from the drummer accompanied by the lead singer (with his hands!) got the crowd going wild. They came off the rest of the crowd got ready but we had a long wait. about half an hour later and all we were seeing was the odd Trujillo sprint behind the stage to get to where he wanted to get to without being noticed...DIDN'T WORK!! Eventually the room went pitch black, lighters were lit as the Ecstasy of Gold came on. The battery intro followed and the boys followed on with a brilliant performance. After this James made an announcement of "WE ARE THE FOUR HORSEMAN!!" before smashing into a great version of the Kill 'Em All classic.
It's been great since they came back this year, obviously happier on the stage than they used to be. James was superb and the red-mist of the one intro just showed how cool one man can look. Kirk was the essence of greatness, his solos perfect (including one in the middle of Frantic oddly enough!) Lars was his usuall mad, boxer-short-wearing self and at one point wiped the sweat off of kirk's face in the middle of a solo. Also squeezing his sweaty shirt onto a lucky front row!! And of course Rob...Excellent. I wasn't keen on his at first i will admit but he is an amazing bass player and he has definately helped make the band what it is now.
This was the first time I had seen the band and will certainly not be the last. As announced Donnington is coming up and i'm there!! The only negative was the sound which was not at it's greatest quality but who gives a shit when the noise coming out of it is from our boys?? Finally here is the setlist:
Setlist:
Battery
The Four Horsemen
Ride The Lightening
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
For Whom The Bell Tolls (After a funky Rob bass solo)
Frantic

Master Of Puppets (Finally they're playing the full version!)
Fight Fire With Fire
Seek And Destroy

One (This and Master of Puppets got the biggest cheer)
Enter Sandman
Blitzkrieg (Strange choice but brilliant)
