GIG REPORT Location: Chicago, IL Date: Aug 27, 2004 Venue: Allstate Arena Other bands: Godsmack
Report: Kristin
This was my very first concert, and i thank god it was to see Metallica, the one band i've praised for years! To see my four horsemen up on stage and to be soooo incredibly close was worth EVERY SINGLE toil and trouble that i put myself through to get to that sold out show. I Lied, i cheated, i crawled my way to this concert to see them even just for an hour. knowing that my parents would NEVER let me go to any concert, i took matters into my own hands--and it was the best decision i've made during high school years!! i dont even have my driver's license! i am fricken 15 and obsessed with the greatest band in the world, so shut up. Godsmack opened and absolutely BLEW ME AWAY. they were incredibly impressive and hotter by each song! They did a phenomenal job and helped start the perfect night on the right foot. I was not surprised to see the Allstate Arena clouded in smoke (and ppl were smoking EVER! YTHING and offering complete strangers as myself) and if you told me that half of the crowd was drunk, i expected that too. There was NO WAY you couldn't be the least bit high after that concert! All that smoke people blew into your faces, all the things being passed, and more than 3 hours of it had to have some kind of effect on everyone. by the time Godsmack left the stage the beer was cut off and a riot began--which scared the crap out of me considering i was kinda a runaway with my friend, completely defenseless and amongst huge and VERY ANGRY people, haha. All we wanted was a bottle of water!! which by the way was like $4. Right when my friend and i finally got in our seats (The BEST SEATS EVER!!) the cameras scanned the packed and pumped up crowd which showed up on the 8 gigantic screens above the stage, the lights went out and even though it was intensely hot in the arena, a chill raced down every neck and back as the first notes wer! e struck on the guitar to play the very first song: Blackened. From then on it was a race to keep up with the energy of the band as the players dominated the stage and their rowdy army of fans answering back the beckoning to release their anger. All at once we tasted the joy of being ALIVE that day, that moment in time i cant allow myself to forget. Like i said, i worked more than my ass off to see them--so i made 100% sure i destroyed my voice at the show :D The guys looked as young and energized as they did on tv in the past...and boy were they on FIRE! Song by song, i could not get enough, nor could i believe my eyes i was actually where i was. The performance of Nothing Else matters, the emerald green light vertically projected on from the floor of the stage and the holding up of lighters amidst the dark, was nothing short of beautiful. I was surprised they played Disposable Heroes, which i learned later was the first l! ive performance of that song in ten years. i slept at my friend's house when i the show was over, then ran home and immediately hit the showers and washed my clothes before anyone concluded that i was a full out druggie (ME??! on drugs?? lol) it was a spectacular and special night, the best night of my puny teenage life so far...i pulled it off...and thank god my parents still dont know i went. i'd be dead. lol.
