GIG REPORT Location: Columbus, OH Date: Sep 24, 2004 Venue: Value City Arena Other bands: Godsmack Report: Andy Jalwan
This was my second Metallica show in a week, as I took in the Cleveland show on Friday as well. Godsmack did they same set they did in Cleveland. The drum solo that the drummer and Sully performed together, was paricularly amazing. I heard Godsmack is recording shows on this leg for a DVD and I would buy it just for that solo. After Godsmack finished up there was approximately a 45 minute intermission before Metallica. The same stage set up was used with all these light fixtures positioned around the stage and all the bouncers were waving flashlights around the crowd. Ecstasy of Gold kicked right into blackened which led straight into fuel. James was kick ass as usual. His energy level was extremely high. I was kind of disappointed at one point when the whole arena was lit up and it was almost embarassing at how empty the place was.
Notes:
*No leaf clover was preceded by the S&M intro.
*Fade to Black seemed like a crowd favorite.
*Beer sales ended when metallica took the stage and according to arena workers that was requested by the band due to James new found sobriety. Who knows?
*At one point when they went into Kirk's solo James seemed confused as to whether it was Kirk's solo or Rob's.
*At one point Rob came out with a hat on that looked like a Boston Bruins hat, not sure though. He did the same thing in Cleveland.
*The pyro during "one" was almost unbearable. It was extremely loud, hot and bright. I felt bad for the spotlight guys above the stage because it seemed like the explosions were going off right underneath them.
*I caught three picks. One said metallica on it, one had a caricature of James, and the other had a caricature of Kirk. Guy next to me caught one that said St. anger with the fist.
