GIG REPORT Location: Arnhem, The Netherlands Venue: Gelredome Stadium Date: 8. june, 2006 Support acts: Trivium, Bullet For My Valentine, Avenged Sevenfold Report by: Nico Baake
In a packed stadium with about 40,000 to 50,000 fans, Metallica gave a wonderful show yesterday. The sound check took about 40 minutes, but finally the lights went out and the opening tune started. Two screens showed a movie fragment and after that, Metallica entered the stage.
The opening song was Motorbreath, and immediately the crowd went loose. After that, Fuel and Wherever I May Roam were played. Then, James made an announcement. They would play a new song! Short after the song was started, it was also stopped. Rob told us they couldn't continue, because they had to find the real bass-player. Of course, he meant bass-guitar, and the fans and Metallica were laughing! Having the right bass-guitar, the song was finished.
After a few songs, some words about Master Of Puppets appeared on the screens, and the band played the entire album. On a huge screen, some clips were shown. For example a green eye during The Thing That Should Not Be, a man in a prison cell during Welcome Home (Sanitarium), and a changing landscape during Orion. That screen really adds a lot to the show! After the entire album was played, a picture of Cliff Burton appeared on the screens to honor him.
Before One started, the place turned into a battlefield when fireworks were used for the first time during the show.
During "Die die my darling" the band asked the band-members of the support acts Trivium and Avenged Sevenfold on stage to help them with the vocals. Man, there were thirteen people on stage, and it sounded great! The show was ended with Seek And Destroy.
It really was a wonderful show, with a great performance of Metallica and a very enthusiastic crowd. Thank you Metallica!
