This is yet another Metallica tribute CD, or is it? On the back of the cover you can read "Crimson Mask Records" has pulled together 12 of metal's heaviest hitters to rework the classics that shaped the genre". Well, the songs on this CD is well known, but I have only barely heard of 3 of the 12 bands before, and they are very underground, so, you don't need to buy the CD for the performers.
Of course we have all heard the songs before and there are some very cool versions here. "Whiplash" played by crematorium includes some words from Metallica from various interviews. Nice. The song is also fast and a real neckbreaker. Death metal vocals. "Fight fire with fire" by Habeas corpus (Never heard of them) is cool to, but all they make me do is wanting to hear the originals. Yes, no one can play Metallica songs like Metallica and after listening to these 12 covers I am way too bored.
While listening to the songs I thought that I had heard this before and no I don't mean the songs, but these versions. I checked my Metallica tribute album collection and yes, it has been released before. This is the exact album as the "Overload: A Tribute To Metallica" CD. In other words this is close to a rip-off. The front cover is cool though.
