Dreram Theater drummer Mike Portnoy sent blabbermouth.net a list of his top 10 best albums from 2008 and you might already guessed that Death Magnetic was at the top. Here is his comments on it. "Is this too obvious a pick? Perhaps.....but it's absolutely deserving. No other album has kicked my ass this year as much as this one has... This is the new Metallica album I've been waiting almost 20 years for! That they made an album this strong and inspired 25 years after their debut is absolutely incredible and completely unprecedented (I challenge you to name three other bands that you can say that about... I can't!)"

Revolver: What did it take, personally, between the four of your to make a record like this?
Hetfield: Personally? A lot of respect. A lot of communication, and a lot of focus when we are there. There's a lot of honesty, and, y'know, giving honest feedback that's helpful for the project, not just button-pushing and twisting knives. Stuff that's really honest and will make the project better. And I think we're all getting a little better at that; our skin is a little thicker, and we're able to let stuff we don't think fits bounce off, y'know. And working with [producer] Rick Rubin, we learned a lot about that!
