Lars with Deep Purple

Lars Ulrich has offered his stick wielding services for a potential Deep Purple reunion tour.

The problem is that there is already a Deep Purple lineup actively recording and touring. The proposed reunion would be with what is known as the “Mark III” version of the group, which featured David Coverdale, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, keyboardist Jon Lord and bassist Glenn Hughes, all who have departed the band at various points over the years.

Will Lars Ulrich join Deep Purple? Mark III drummer Ian Paice is in the current Mark VIII edition, which might put him in tough position in taking over the kit for the reunion.

“I’ll volunteer myself for that,” he told Classic Rock magazine in an interview that hit newsstands this week. “If they need a drummer, David Coverdale has my number.”

The Danish-born Ulrich’s history with Deep Purple has long been the stuff of legend; his first concert was actually the first gig by the Mark III lineup in Copenhagen in 1973. But his enthusiasm may have already been cut short by Lord, who took to his Web site to address the rumors.
