==== #2 IN US, #1 IN GERMANY =====================================
Garage Inc. debuts on the US charts at #2, Garth Brooks continues to hold
the #1 slot after smashing the record for most albums sold in a debut
week. Garage Inc. sold 426,000 copies its debut week, not bad for a double
CD with no original songs and very little promotion. In Germany it went
straight to the top.

==== 1999 PLANS ==================================================
This spring Metallica will launch another world tour in late April.. the
first show will be a concert featuring a full orchestra in San Francisco.
The will coincide with an album of Metallica songs featuring orchestra.
The band will then carry the tour (minus orchestra) to South America,
Europe and possibly some North American dates (including the postponed
Hawaii, Alaska and Mexico City dates). The band also hopes to start
recording a new album before the year 2000, probably in late 1999. To
welcome the year 2000 the band plans a New Years Eve Party in Michigan,
probably at the Pontiac Silverdome. Look for Ted Nugent on the bill. Jason
says: "Yeah, there'll be a big show on New Year's Eve, with big
pyrotechnics and stuff,'' "we're gonna blow a hole right out of the center
of Michigan.''

Metallica will also be in Europe this summer for a festival tour. I'll be
there!

==== INTERVIEW ===================================================
Interview by Hard Force Magazine in France Translated by Graham Arneson
doublempm@geocities.com

Your son, Myles Ulrich was born last august. How do you plan on raising
him with recording, and touring?

It’s hard. Him and me (points at James Hetfield) had kids almost at the
same time, it’s also funny when you think we’ve been together since we
were17. We haven’t had the same kind of problems like some bands of the
same genre like SLAYER or when one of the members has a kid, it turns
everything around. For me and James, it’s easier from now on, because we
appreciate the time when we’re recording now. In the past, the only thing
we liked to do was tour. We like to record more and more. And it’s touring
that gets boring, because during a year you do the same thing every night.
I think we would all like to tour less, record more, and spend more time
at home. I don’t have a precise way I will raise my kid. I think i would
like to give him as European as possible. It’s very important for me, the
balance between the European and American. I will take the best attitude
to think European with the best American options.

Your life in the middle of rock or alcohol, drugs and the endurance are
more common now. Do you think you will expose your child to that?

I won’t try to cover it up, but on the other side, I won’t be sniffing
cocaine with him on our knees! When he was 3 weeks old, he went on tour
for a 4 days. He did the tour between Seattle, Portland, and Vancouver. He
took the plane, and was backstage every night. I’m 34. I’m married and i
have a child. We will be together always, but differently. There won’t be
any more groupies, or bags of cocaine like in the past.

You and James are married, but pictures of your children are all over the
studio What do your wivesthink of this?

It’s part of our inspiration

Matt Damon used to go out with your wife, Skylar, and he said in an
American magazine, that she married a fucking rock star with 80 million
dollars and a private jet. What do you think of this?

Last year, i tried to know this guy and we’re finally on good terms. He’s
also on good terms with Skylar. They were together for 4 years. I think
that he has always had ambitions and a good outlook, and it was more
important than his relationship with her. I think he was hoping that
Skylar would wait patiently until he became a star and he would go back
with her afterwards.

Your mother died recently. Will this have any affect on Metallica?

We delayed a few dates in Australia. I needed a little time, but we had to
hurry up. After the disappearance of my mother, I went to Denmark, and i
spent a week in Paris. I was with a good friend of mine who is an actor.
He was in a film festival in Paris which took place in the first week of
April. He asked me to come to his home for a visit. I stayed with him for
a week and it was cool. I think that with San Francisco and Copenhagen,
it’s one of the cities that i hate to leave the most. In Paris it’s very
easy to go in the road, and remain anonymous.

You recently founded a record company, TRC Records, what are it’s projects?

Sooner or later it’ll happen. One band, DDT is recording with producer
Matt Wallace, who was with Faith No More. He came to Canada and played a
punk-hip hop version of Faith No More. There were 2 singers: one who
sings, and one who raps. DDT plays a very aggressive punk and the music
has some very good melodies.

What is your role in this label?

Get money! Some people go out and try to find bands. I personally decide
who signs, among the commercial potential of the albums. The guys from
Pearl Jam have a label for helping their lyrics. This isn’t the case for
mine. Like we say in the US, it’s purely commercial. I like to work with
bands i find talented. I like to develop songs, and suggest one thing or
the other, or decide on the choice of titles. I help bands to develop when
i think that they have the potential. When I talk to readers of Kerrang!,
Metal Hammer, or Hard Force, I don’t talk to fans of Metallica, but fans
of music.

Metallica is suing the people who released the album "Bay Area Thrashers",
but your manager Peter Mensch told us in an interview that he encourages
the bootlegs. So why are you doing this?

Because the disc was released under BMG and wasn’t presented like a
bootleg, but an early live album. I love and encourage bootlegs. I have
hundreds, from Deep Purple, Oasis, and all the bands that I like. I am in
favor of bootlegs, under the condition that they are not sold, and give
kids the impression that they are official, approved by the band. It’s
against that we are fighting, not anything else.

The compilation of reprises, "Garage Inc." is the third album out in a
yearly rhythm, like you announced in 1996. Are you planning on keeping
this rhythm?

That’s my goal: I want to try to maintain the frequency of one album a
year. It seems that after having taken time between every album at the
beginning of our career, learning how to function in the studio, we’re
gonna try to find a better rhythm. I look at bands like Pearl Jam or
R.E.M. who release album after album a year and tour 6 months afterwards.
This becomes less monotonous. A year will become more balanced: 4 months
in the studio, 6 months on tour, and 2 months on vacation.

A lot of fans regret not hearing the fast beating of your double-bass. Do
you think you’ll go back to this on the next album?

No. We don’t have a project of this type. What I know is that when we play
a song like "Fight Fire With Fire" we can’t play without it. Between
"Battery", "Damage Inc.", "Trapped Under Ice", "Fight Fire With Fire", and
"Metal Militia", we think around it. I love to play these songs live, but
i would like to play slower, i don’t want to compose anything of this
genre. We have live songs who, like "Battery", are the ultimate thrash
metal. Everything’s there in five minutes. Why preserve this when it’s not
better of different? Why start over again? It’s not very interesting to me.

Metallica experimented with different styles of music on Load, and Reload,
but never used samples like used in a lot of the world of rock at the
moment. Have you thought of incorporating electronic elements in your
music?

I like to look at this CD (Garage Inc.) like the end of a second chapter.
The first was from Kill ‘em All to ...And Justice For All, the second
began at the black album and is finished with Garage Inc. Now we have to
start over again. We don’t have any idea how we’re going to do it. The
black album, Load and Reload, were three albums who went in the same
direction. It is important for us to take a completely different
direction. This is what I’m hoping in any case.

But keeping the same heavy metal roots?

In Staying who we are: James, Kirk, Jason and me. What’s going to happen
is the base of everything. I want to say that it will allways be
Metallica. I’m sure that we’re not going to release a disc of entirely
irish balads. There will allways be the elements of Metallica. Which ones?
I still don’t know.

Kirk said that he listens to the old Iron Maiden, while James and Jason
are big Sepultura fans. What metal do you actually like?

If you go in my car right now, you’ll find Alice In Chains, Deep Purple,
and Mercyful Fate. I have some demos of DDT. These last 6 months, I have
been listening to above all, the songs from Garage Inc. So, i am listening
to Blue Oyster Cult, and things like this. If not, when i’m at home, i
listen to Alice In Chains, Corrosion Of Conformity... Right now, i’m
listening to old Judas Priest, like "Sin After Sin". The song "Dissisdent
Agressor" is amazing.

Kirk and you have been the most critiqued of the band by your image. Do
you think you’ll change anything?

No, I don’t have any problems of identity. What does the image mean? It’s
nothing but an insignificant detail of who you are. We also have a certain
image with our black clothes, and our long hair. To be in Metallica, to be
in a heavy metal band, you have to look a certain way? Personally, i
changed, and to be honest, between me and the others, and i can’t be
against it. I think we’ve become more honest with this plan. For the last
2 or 3 years, I’ve had many interviews. And i can speak more frankly, more
openly without being afraid of hurting someone. Psychologicly, me and Kirk
have allwaysbeen the most adventurous of the band . That’s how it is.
Politically, we’re more to the left, while James and Jason are on the
right. James and Jason are more prudent in their experiences, but don’t
hold me on what i say. They don’t want to make an error. I love to play
with perceptions, because it’s funny. I have been known to abuse this, but
when i look at the world o! f heavy metal, it’s very closed off. I don’t
like to lose the fan’s tollerance. For me, it is more important to balance
certain things than to be quiet. Wheather you like it or not, call me
crazy. What we want to prove is that we can play heavy metal without
following the rules, or the look. For me this is very important.
