===================================================================
EDITORIAL. Hello again. This newsletter is a bit slow, hope that's OK. I'm
currently having a summer holliday. My site has also been down, the
providers fucked me up and I had to move my site. The new URL is
http://www.kystnett.no/~sem. I will soon move it again and get my own
domain. Anyway, enjoy the newsletter.

=== BETTER THAN YOU - PROMO SINGLE =======================
"Better Than You" is released as a 1-track promo CD single. It has an
insert, but I don't think it will be released for the public. Look out for
this rare item!
=== METALLICA ON THE RADIO =======================
This is the transcript from a telephone call that Lars and Jerry
Cantrell made to the local radio station. I taped it off the air and
typed it out as best I could.
LARS ULRICH AND JERRY CANTRELL CALLING DETROIT'S 101.1 WRIF
During the first Metallica show at Pine Knob (Detroit, MI) there was a
large amount of sod (chunks of grass on dirt) thrown from the Lawn
section onto the Pavillion section during Jerry Cantrell's (of Alice
in Chains) set. Later, after the show, Lars Ulrich and Jerry Cantrell
called one of the Detroit radio stations about the incident. Here's
the portion I was able to record off the radio the next day (they
played it a couple times). Some of this may be available as a sound
file on WRIF's homepage (www.wrif.com).
[Meltdown, the dj playing the phone call the next day]: In all my 9
years on the radio I've never had a band call me up on the request
line. That's what happened to Art Junior last night. Check this out.
Jerry Cantrell and Lars cruised over to Winsor (Canada), called him on
the request line and Art put them on the air. Here's a little of how
that went. Pay attention because this speaks volumes about the
coolness of Lars and the boys and about tonight's show, okay so check
this out on the WRIF.
[Art Jr.] ... we're live
(Jerry and Lars laughing)
[Art Jr.] Announce youselves ...
[Jerry] Jerry Cantrell
[Lars] uh, Lars ... Can-Ulrich (laughs)
[Art Jr.] (laughs)
[Lars] We're up at the, uh, US-Canada immigration boarder so if we have
to, uh, jump for a second to get strip searched we'll uh let you
know.
[Art Jr.] There you go.
[Lars] Lars ...
[Art Jr.] Lars of Metallica and Jerry Cantrell live on the phone lines,
wanted to clarify what happened with Cantrell's set.
[Jerry] 'ell there's alot of grass being being thrown and, ah,
contrary to reports it wasn't really being thrown at us too much but
most of the damage was at the sound board which made the PA cut out
and, ah, but, ah, it was (laughs) kinda wild watching it go down but,
uh our sound, the sound, ah the sound desk definitely got pelted quite
a bit but, ah, we had to cut our set short and hopefully tomorrow
we'll be able to finish it. (laughs)
[Art Jr.] How many songs short?
[Jerry] We we did most mostly the full set. We, we ah've been closing
with Braindamage and Eclipse by Pink Floyd (Art Jr.: "wow") a great
number and we didn't get to it but ah yah, that's what, uh, it went down.
[Art Jr.] So we missed two songs?
[Jerry] Missed two songs and i think alot of people probably missed
part of the show because they were trying to defend themselves.
(Jerry and Lars laughing)
(can't understand a few words)
[Jerry] ya know
[Art Jr.] I mean, for your sake, alot of calls, tons of calls. I was
fielding call after call about people who were just ravin' about the
show and then were totally pisted because they missed the entire set.
[Jerry] Well I really really appreciate the, the, the calls in because
we've been havin' a great time on this tour and up until the point
where the grass started getting thrown, uh, everybody was having a
really good time and ah you know, like I said, it really wasn't
directed towards us but it got a little out of hand.
[Lars] Can you not go into that no cell area?
(everyone laughs)
We're both sitting here on cell phones so ... Hello?
[Art Jr.] Ya I'm hearin' you.
[Lars] Okay, I just want you to understand one, I just want all the
listeners to understand one thing, this is Lars from Metallica
speaking, uhm, I just want all the guys out there listening to
understand one thing which is really simple that .. it's like look
there's like, uhm, there's about 150 cities to play in North America
and, uhm, we have always loved Detroit and always have an incredible
relationship with the people of Detroit and the radio stations here
but you gotta understand one thing that when you guys get to the point
where you start throwing grass and stuff like that what you're really
screwing up it's not really the Metallica show, but your screwing up
the chance for bands like Metallica, Pantara, or Jerry Cantrell or
anybody, to come back and play again at that venue and so it's like we
go play anywhere else and we will but it's like (Lars starts breaking
up here)
[Art Jr.] I think we're losing Lars. You still there Lars?
[Jerry] Ya, uh, we're in the tunnel can you still hear me?
[Art Jr.] Barely.
[Jerry] Barely okay, uh, basically I just wanted to say you know I
mean, uh, basically the only people that really, uh, are getting hurt
by it is, is the fans you know cause it's like Lars was sayin' earlier
just makes it alot harder for bands to come play, you know, and places
and, ah, you know, it's definitely good to have fun but tearing up the
place is another matter (laughs through this last part).
(all three talking at once)
[Lars] You know, just don't screw up the venue because it's just
silly, it doesn't do anything for anybody and, uh, at the end of the
day what it really does is just prevents rock shows from happening
there again and WRIF or Metallica or Jerry Cantrell or anybody just
don't want that to happen so there's my message so so think of .. and
if you guys want to screw up the venue i respect that and i will be
behind you.
(some of conversation is cut out here that wasn't played on the radio
when I taped it)
So that's my story
[Jerry] Alright so listen, ah, we just want to say I think we'll just
let you go a head and rock then and (Art Jr.: "Cool") that was
basically it and we just want to go ahead and say thanks alot for
playin' the tunes and everybody who called in that was concerned and
if you can get back in tomorrow we'll just try to make it happen you
know one more time and we'll try to finish the set.
[Art Jr.] And to tell everybody what we're exactly talking about
before I hang up with you we're talking about the sod being thrown
(Jerry: "oh yes") and, uh, unfortunately cutting your set short, a
couple songs short at that,
[Jerry] and damaging some of the sound desks as well
[Art Jr.] and what Lars is saying is that if you guys want to do that
he's going to support it but, uh, he'd rather you not do it because
he'd like to come back here and jam again but if, uh (Jerry: "heck
yes") exactly
[Jerry] Pine Knob's a great place to play.
[Art Jr.] Isn't it?
[Jerry] And, ah, we'd just like to see that continue.
[Art Jr.] And Detroit, rock city, gets no better.
[Jerry] You got it.
[Art Jr.] You got it.
[Lars] Thanks to WRIF
(Lars and Jerry talking at once)
[Lars] I've got to tell you guys it's been amazing and mandatory
metallica (garbled; switches phones; some of this cut from radio?) I'm
on Jerry's phone now is that better?
[Art Jr.] Yah!
[Lars] Okay so uhm, I'm just saying WRIF has been incredible in
supporting Metallica and we've been hear since wednesday night and
we've been listening to your station and we love you guys; we
appreciate the support and we love Detroit and this is one of our 2 or
3 favorite places to play and ah we just want to come back and play
for the rest of our lives and lets just not screw this up for anybody
else you know and it's really that simple.
[Art Jr.] Well cool man, i'll let you guys go.
[Lars] And also i just gotta say one thing
[Art Jr.] Yes, sir.
[Lars] I don't want to be like the kinda rock silly guy who calls up on the
station and starts preaching to everybody.
[Art Jr.] Oh, no
[Lars] No, at the end of the day what rock and roll is supposed to be
about is to be, you know, freedom and liberation and people doing what
they want. I just want people to understand that what they're really
doing .. they're not hurting Jerry, they're, ya know, not hurting us,
what they're really doing is preventing all the fifteen sixteen
thousand people who bought tickets to the show tonight and tomorrow
from these type of things happening again you know what? At the end of
the day, that's just a real loss to you guys not to us (aj: "Big time")
because there are other places we can play.
[Art Jr.] Because you guys just won't come back.
[Lars] Yah! We just want to keep coming back.
[Art Jr.] Absolutely.
[Lars] Ya so I gotta go clear immigration now cause i'm on my way to
Canada so i'm on my way outta here. So Arthur, it was good speaking
with you.
[Art Jr.] Absolutely, Lars.
[Lars] Keep pumpin' with Metallica, keep pumpin' with Jerry and, ah,
that's my story.
Thanks to Julia Plummer for this.

=== NEW COVER ALBUM ============================================
I just picked up this new album of groups covering Metallica songs.
It's called "The Blackest Album:An Industrial Tribute To Metallica".
It's not techno, mind you. I wasn't too fond of the remix of "...The
Bell Tolls" on the Spawn soundtrack. D.J. Spooky's good, I just thought
it could have been better. Anyway, here's a track listing:
1. Apoptygma Berzerk.......Nothing Else Matters
2. Die Krupps..............Battery(re-filtered by filter section)
3. Razed in Black..........The Thing That Should
Not Be(Back in Black mix)
4. Spew....................For Whom The Bell Tolls
5. Hellsau.................Master Of Puppets
6. Razed in Black..........Damage Inc.
7. Abaddon of Venom........Whiplash
8. Godheads................Wherever I May Roam
9. The Element.............Nothing Else Matters
(Elemental Mix)
10. Carbon 12...............The Thing That Should
Not Be
11. Birmingham 6............Seek And Destroy
12. In Strict Confidence....Sad But True
13. La Honda Militia........Battery(High Voltage Mix)
There's not a bad song on the album. The first track is really amazing.
Damage Inc. is HEAVY on this. If you like to hear different artists
versions of Metallica songs, this is probably one of the best that's out
there now. I highly reccomend this one. Enjoy!

=== GIG REPORT ============================================
July 28
Riverport Amp.
Maryland Hights, MO
What can I say about Metallica at Riverport? I think I can sum up the
answer in 2 words: Kick Ass!! Atfer hearing about the shows,
listening to live B-sides, and dreaming, I finally got to see them
live, and God, was it gloruos!
After the opining act creared the stage, it was a good 5-10 minites
before Metallica took the stage. Within that time the half-full
amphitheatre quickly filled and untill 'Tallica took the stage, the
audince admused them selves by throing the plaic cups throug the air
with some still having beer in them. But as soon and the lights went
out, everyone turn there attion to the stage. As "Breadfan" washed
over us, the crowed got so load and the engry went thourgh the roof!
This enrgy carried on to "Master Of Puppets," an ovius crowed pleaser.
As with "Breadfan" and "Master," we sang along with "Of Wolf And Man"
& "The Thing That Should Not Be." We finally got what we desired as
"Thing" went right in to "Fuel," one of my personal fraverts. We had a
blast singing/saying (?) Marianne Faithfull's part in "The Memory
Remains." The fun continued with "Bleeding Me," "Nothing Else
Matters," and "Until It Sleeps." If we wern't alive by then, "King
Nothing" and "Wherever I May Roam" would have done it. As soon as the
band was done with "Wherever," darkness drifed over us as all of the
light was turn of. And from that darkness can the unmistakeable sound
of war, we knew it was time for "One." When we were done wishing for
death, we we had no chouch but to "Fight Fire With Fire." And once
again the stage went black for about 3-5 minits as the band and crew
got ready for the acoustic set that included "Low Man's Lyric," "The
Four Horsemen," and "Motorbreath." The acoustic set was a change of
pace for Metallica and aloud them to "Fuck around." It was not that
long before the band went back to electric for "Sad But True" and then
stright into the best fuckin' metal song on earth: "Enter Sandman."
Then the band put down there guitars and sticks and walked around the
stage waving to us; then they left. We thought it was over until James
walk back on with his guitar and played the beinging of "Creeping
Death" with the rest of the band. Not to long into the song they
stoped and told us that was all, we talk them out of it on the finish
"Creeping" for us.
>From the gargantuan, heart pounding fiff of "Mater of Puppets," to
balladic "Nothing Else Matters" and the different fell of the acoustic
set, this tour really shows what kind of talent Metallica has.
