=== 1998 MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS NOMINATIONS =======================
"Unforgiven II" is nominated as the best Rock video for 1998. Other bands
in the same category are Aerosmith - "Pink", Foo Fighters - "Everlong" and
Dave Matthews Band for "Don't Drink The Water"

=== NEW HOME VIDEO/DVD ============================================
On November 17th, 1998 Metallica will release the previously announced
recorded Ft. Worth concert in two formats. VHS video for those with
"regular" video players and in the hot, new DVD format.

DVD is a fairly new format of audio-visual technology designed for use
with your home television. While a DVD disc looks like a regular CD, it
offers high definition video and state of the art audio, with quality as
high as your local movie theater. It can also be interactive, allowing
seamless editing and search, multiple camera angles and many other
"extras."

With the band using this format, Metallica fans can expect a more personal
and interactive home concert experience. Including being able to choose
from multiple camera angles, they might even be able to follow their
favorite band member for an entire show, or checkout what's going on in
the production offices and backstage.

A VHS version will also be released the same day, however video tape will
not be able to support the extras that will be exclusive to DVD.

The concert was filmed on May 9th and 10th, 1997 in Ft.Worth, Texas by
Wayne Isham and crew.

        Setlist:
             So What
             Creeping Death
             Sad But True
             Ain't My Bitch
             Hero Of The Day
             King Nothing
             One
             Fuel
             "Bass and guitar doodle"
             Nothing Else Matters
             Until It Sleeps
             For Whom The Bell Tolls
             Wherever I May Roam

== GIG REPORT, 8 JULY 98 ==========================================
Wednesday, July 8
Blossom Music Center
Cleaveland, OH

Once again Metallica has impressed the hell out of me and thousands of
other fans. Performing for a sold-out show of over 18,000 screaming
maniacs, Metallica brought some serious kick-ass entertainment to Ohio.
The set list was a perfect blend of old and new (they can't play
everything!) including such favorites as Master of Puppets, Bleeding Me,
Nothing Else Matters, Fight Fire with Fire, Enter Sandman and One. I was
blown away when they played Until It Sleeps, which usually sounds kind of
slow. Hearing it live set that song a-fire! They played a 3 song acoustic
set near the end which included Low Man's Lyric, The Four Horsemen, and
Motorbreath. While many people may not appreciate the quality of the
music played, because it was played acoustically, I found that version of
the Four Horsemen to be even better than the original! Of course they
couldn't end like that so they played out Sad But True, Enter Sandman, and
Creeping Death - the crowd went wild!

At the end of the show, after giving away to the audience all sorts of
picks, shirts, and drum sticks (as they usually do), Lars thanked the
audiance then Kirk did, which I thought was nice since most of the time we
just get to hear James during the show.

Since camera's weren't allowed at the concert, I brought along my
sketchbook with the hopes of drawing some pictures of the guys while they
played. It's quite an interesting experience to try to draw Metallica
from the lawn section! I was able to do about 20 rough sketches which
includes pictures of the opening bands. While they may not be
masterpieces, they still capture some of the mood of the concert. I've put
the sketches on my webpage:

http://www.astro.lsa.umich.edu/~plummer/html/metart/

There will soon be other more finished pieces there - inspired by
Metallica's kick-ass awesome concert! Enjoy!

== "Fuel, Fire, and a Free Front Row Ticket" ======================
The following Metalli-history is written by Phil Boyle, the best
non-member-metallica-guitarist. He is the person behind all the tabs
on Encyclopedia Metallica, and the rest of the web as well as most
webmasters simply copies his work for their pages. Anyway, here we go

Ring.....Ring.....Ri-

"Hello?"
"Uh, yeah, hey Phil."
"Hey Mark, what's up?"
"Uh, I can't make it to the show on Wednesday."
"WHAT? Dude, it's Monday! You can't back out now!"
"Well, I gotta. I got something going on, and I can't make it."
"Damnit, where am I gonna find someone to take this ticket?"
"I dunno. If you can't find anyone, I'll pay anyway."

Well, needless to say this week didn't start out real great. I went to
work Tuesday morning and told my friend "Hey Ray, guess where we're going
tomorrow?" Ray wanted to go before, but didn't have the cash, but since
Mark already paid me for his ticket, it's his loss!

Fast forward to Wednesday (7/8/98). We leave from work at about 4:30 and
head out to Blossom Music Center. We get there (after a brief wrong
turn..er detour) at about 5:15 or so. Unfortunately I got busted trying to
sneak my camera in (bastards!), so I had to take it back to my car instead
of losing it for good. I got tickets through the Metallica Club, so we
headed to the box office to pick them up. We got the tix and headed over
to the entrance. "Wow, great section!" exclaimed the girl taking tickets.
Things are looking good!

This was my first time at the pavilion, so I didn't have any idea where we
were sitting. So we started walking around trying to find the Metclub
booth which was at the end of the path past the stage. When we get there
we meet Eric Nielson from Chapter of the Mad and Dan (Jaymz666) from Inter
Sandman who both won the latest Shortest Straw
contest to follow the band on tour for a week. I give my Metclub card and
get a ticket being old to show up around 6 to find out who gets backstage.
So Ray and I head off to the pavilion to see where we're sitting.

Now, we knew the tix must be pretty good according to the girl at the
entrance. Each person we asked just pointed to the person at the next
section closer to the front. When we finally got to the person by the
first five rows, my eyes were wide open. When he took us down the first
row my jaw dropped. When he stood in front of James' mic and said here you
go, I almost fainted dead away. The only thing I could do was stand there
and stare, until I muttered "No one pinch me, I
don't want to wake up."

"Phil? Phil. PHIL!!! Wake up dumbass, it's almost 6." Oh yeah, so we head
of back to the Metclub booth to go see if this really is (a dream) the
luckiest day of my life. Niculas (from the Met on Tour page) was running
the show when we got there. The first 10 club members to show up got
passes no matter how long they had been in the club. I was number 32. Then
the 5th year and 4th year members. Finally they call 3rd year members, hey
wow that's me! I give my card and
drivers license (hey that picture is 4 years old, that's why I had no
hair!) and get the pass!! Oh my god, I'm going to meet Metallica. "No one
pinch me, I don't want to wake up."

We hang around the Metclub booth for about 20 minutes or so before heading
down the hill to the side of the stage and the building that has all of
the dressing rooms and dining hall and stuff. We hung around there for a
while and sat and talked to all sorts of people (some of whom have
actually been to this page, See, I told you I was him!) The "Days of the
New" set started and finished while we were back there (no big loss there).

James was the first one out. We all got in line and James went through
saying 'hi' and signing stuff. I kinda freaked and got stupid when he came
over. I shook his hand and congratulated him on the new baby. I had him
sign my 12 track KEA, the Guitar World "Guitar Legends Metallica" issue,
and my copy of "Fuel and Fire" (Sem's book) When I asked him if he's seen
it yet, he said yes. I told him that it was by the guy that ran
Encyclopedia Metallica and that it was part my page, he said he's seen it
but not much else. (looking back that was probably a bad decision on my
part) He let someone I made a deal with take his picture with me and went
on his way. He probably thinks I'm some asshole or idiot but oh well, he
wouldn't be the first (maybe the most famous though...)

After James went back in Jason came out. Jason seemed pretty hurried
though, flying through the line signing things and taking pictures. I was
surprised how short he is (James absolutely towered over me) but it was
still cool. He signed the stuff too, (although I was worried that KEA
might not be a good idea) he has seen the page too, but hadn't seen the
book. He was pretty impressed by it. Jason, although hurried, was as cool
as everyone makes him out to be.

Well, things were dying down backstage as Jason left and people started
going back up to find their seats. I was still talking to a couple guys
there and ended up talking to Steve "Lars' Cousin" Wiig. For those of you
that haven’t heard of him he writes a lot of articles for the Metclub
magazines and has gotten in pretty good with the band. Steve is pretty
cool, we chatted for a while before I went back to watch the end of the
Jerry Cantrell set.

As I'm walking out of the backstage area, there are those bastards
checking us for cameras AGAIN! The girl that was next to me got busted, so
I'm not sure if the guy that took the pictures for me got out with his or
not. Well, too late now. So I head over to the front row section and watch
the end of JC's set. I don't know much of his music, so I felt a little
stupid up front, but it was cool. I'll have to pick up his album, maybe.
There was at least one AIC song played, but I didn't remember the name.

After a while, the familiar (if you've seen them before the Load tour)
Excasty of Gold played and the crowd went nuts. Lars was carried out on
the back of some huge security guy and the rest just walked out. They went
into Helpless and by the end of the song they were already sweating
rivers. It was kind of interesting to see a guy come out between songs and
mop up the stage (usually just the middle).

It was really great to hear Bleeding Me and The Thing That Should Not Be,
two of my favorite songs, live. Fight Fire With Fire was also awesome.
"I'm in love with that song" James remarked about Fuel which featured
flames shooting out of the stage on either side of Lars' kit, and damn
they were hot, it almost knocked me over. Memory Remains was
awesome with the crowd doing the Marianne Faithful part. Fuel and Memory
played back to back with James' new ESP Les Paul (rounded top, not like
Kirk's flat Eclipse). It was strange (to say the least) to hear the intro
to One without the pyro's, but it was as strong as it's ever been.

The accoustic set has been bashed by a lot of people, and Cleveland
unfortunatly was no exception, greeting it with a large ammount of boos. I
liked Low Man's Lyric, I knew I would. Kirk played the Hurdy Gurdy part
(on his guitar) at the intro. And I knew what to expect when The Four
Horsemen came on and got into it. I didn't like Motorbreath accoustic
though, I would have rather heard Nothing Else Matters accoustic and
Motorbreath normal instead.

Standing about 5 feet away from James was a lesson in guitar for me
though. I just stood there spellbound for parts of the show watching how
he plays some of the parts and how his fingers move. The same with Kirk
and Jason. But it was their guitars that absolutely took my attention. I
couldn't believe the shape the guitars were in (especially Kirk's who were
all older than James') James' "oil finished" explorer is my favorite
guitar. It's not an ESP, but a Ken Lawrence made guitar with awesome
inlays of a tribal hunting. He also had the ESP-elk skull guitar with
barbed wire inlays, the ESP-Les Paul, and the quite impressive evil green
flame ESP-flying V tuned to Eb. He had the ESP-explorer with the diamond
plating and deer skull inlays (available through ESP as the JH-2) tuned to
D for Sad But True and Thingy, and the same resonator accoustic/electric
that he had on the MTV thing last December for the accoustic set.

Kirk had the same arsonal that he's had for a while. Kirk's oldest custom
guitar was his second ESP-strat (KH-2) with the skull and crossbone
inlays. It was real chewed around the edges and it looked (to me) that
some of the paint had chipped off and been re-painted where he put the red
"Hot" sticker. The ESP-Mummy strat and ESP-Ouija appeared, as did his old
Gibson Les Paul custom. The KH-3 Eclipse (Les Paul style but with a flat
top) with the spider graphic and new devil and 13 stickers on it (he's had
them for a while, but you can't buy it that way) rounded out his Eb axes.
Kirk also had 2 electrics tuned to D, the (KH-1) ESP-Flying V with the
devil inlays for Thingy, and the guitar that has been to every show since
MOP his Jackson Rhodes for SBT.

Did we have a good time? Hell yeah. Was I a little dissapointed
meeting James and Jason? Kind of but not really. I have a tendency to
expect too much when I meet people I look up to, obviously they wern't
going to ask me to come up to jam with them, but now some of the mystery
of what they're like and what would happen is gone. Do I wish I didn't
meet them? Hell no, it was cool and I'm glad I did. I'm glad I was lucky
enough to sit that close to a band that will undoubtly
be held in as high regard as Led Zeppelin and the Beatles. Was it the best
day of my life? Probably not, I still think my last day of High School was
when a bunch of guys and I jammed at a senior class picnic and ended up
playing "Am I Evil" in front of all of the nuns, but it's definatly. in
the top 5!
