==== NEW SONGS ====================================================
Metallica is working on new tunes especially for their symphony concerts
in April.
The band is preparing for the shows in collaboration with composer Michael
Kamen, who orchestrated the strings for Metallica's 1991 ballad "Nothing
Else Matters" (RealAudio excerpt) and who has experience working with rock
musicians.

Hetfield said that Kamen is "writing out all the music for the orchestra,"
calling the composer "kind of the bridge between two worlds."

==== METALLICA ON WOODSTOCK US AS WELL ============================
Metallica plan to play the U.S. leg of this year's Woodstock concert,
Hetfield added, which is set to take place July 23-25 in upstate New York.
The band was already slated to headline the European segment of the
Woodstock fest, which is scheduled for July 16-18 in Austria. Both shows
are part of Woodstock '99, which will commemorate the 30th anniversary of
the original festival held in Bethel, N.Y.

==== METALLICA, NUGENT ON NEW YEAR'S BILL =========================
Hard rockers Metallica and Ted Nugent will usher in the next millennium
together with a New Year's Eve show in Pontiac, Mich. At least one other
act will be added to the show at the Pontiac Silverdome, according to a
statement from the concert's promoter, Cellar Door/ Belkin. Nugent, known
for such raunchy '70s hits as "Cat Scratch Fever," recently has been more
visible as a radio talk-show host and hunting advocate than as a musician.

==== REVIEW =======================================================
Metallica: The Memory Remains: Japanese EP

Tracks:
    The Memory Remains (4:38)
Fuel for Fire (Work in Progress with Different Lyrics) (4:41)
    King Nothing (Tepid Mix) (5:08)
For Whom the Bell Tolls (Haven't Heard It Yet Mix) (4:40)
    Memory (Demo Version) (6:43)
The Outlaw Torn (Unencumbered By Manufacturing Restrictions
Version)(10:48)

I figured that since no one ever submitted a review for the Memory
Remains Japanese EP for Sem's newsletter, I'd take the liberty of
undergoing this task myself. With Sem's approval of course, anyway, on
with the review.

Overall I must say that I'm pleased with one of my most recent Metallica
acquisitions. I thought that most of the B-Sides on this release were
cool, with the exception of one which I thought was
okay at best. The B-Sides include two demo versions for both Memory and
an early version of Fuel entitled, "Fuel for Fire." There are two
remixes of previous 'Tallica releases, there's the Tepid Mix of King
Nothing, and DJ Spooky's version of For Whom The Bell Tolls, which to be
exact is the Haven't Heard It Yet Mix. And last, but certainly not
least, is the uncut version of The Outlaw Torn, which is my personal
favorite on this disc. The original version of Memory is identical to
the one that can be heard on Reload, so I won't get into that. So I'll
start with the Demos.

The Fuel for Fire Demo was really cool, complete with different lyrics,
which is the only real difference between this demo and the final version
of Fuel. Sometimes demos don't sound too good, but this was a serious
exception to that notion! It sounds great!! I don't really think of this
as a demo, to me it's an alternate version of Fuel with different lyrics.

The demo for Memory is for the most part like a rough instrumental of it's
final version on Reload. Just a couple of lyrics by Jaymz, but not too
many. This demo was done for the sole purpose of laying down the
structure for this cool Metallica cut. What I like about hearing these
demos is that its a cool behind the scenes look of Metallica's songwriting
process, which is always cool to get a look at, no matter how big or small.

Now for the mixes. The featured mixes are for both King Nothing and For
Whom The Bell Tolls. I thought the Tepid Mix for King was a cool
complement to it's original. It was remixed by Sascha Konietzko with
KMFDM. I don't think too many people would be disappointed with this
mix, it's doesn't consist of echos and reverbs, which in my own humble
opinion, are not really suitable to 'Tallica's songs. The Bells mix was
disappointing for me. It was nothing but a bunch of echos and reverbs, and
to me, that ain't cool in a 'Tallica mix.

But enough of the negative, now for the Unencumbered Version of The Outlaw
Torn. Now this was definitely my favorite B-Side! This version of Outlaw
adds a little over a minute and a half to this cool track (The Load
version of Outlaw clocks in at about 9:52). There's some cool jamming by
the guys, especially Kirks cool solo towards the end. Whenever I listen
to Load, and I get to Outlaw, I find myself preferring the uncut version
to it's original on Load. Hey, what can I say? Less is not more in my
book when it comes to Metallica. The reason why Outlaw's original version
was Torn (no pun intended) was because the record company told the guys
they couldn't go over a second past 78.59, or else our Load CDs wouldn't
play without potentially skipping. So Outlaw can be heard in it's
entirety on this Japanese Edition of The Memory Remains.

Well, overall, this disc will please any Metallica fan. So if you see
it, pick it up! Happy hunting!!!
